The 3-2-1 backup rule, and why an offline copy beats ransomware
Backups only count if they restore. Here is the simple rule we apply for every client.
Ransomware now targets backups first. If your backup server is reachable from the network it protects, it can be encrypted along with everything else.
The rule
- 3 copies of your data
- 2 different types of storage
- 1 copy kept offline or immutable, out of reach of the network
Test the restore, not the backup
A green backup report says a job ran, not that you can recover. Schedule a restore test every quarter: pick a server, restore it to an isolated network and check that the application starts.
Our backup & disaster recovery service includes Veeam setup, replication, monitoring and regular restore tests.
